You can now check out my tamer ceramics at the Flower Farm Nursery in Loomis, just north of Sacramento in Ca. I have a few korean Teacups there and a yarn bowl or two. None too monstery to fit the area :)
This is a great little coffee shop, nursery, local artist's store and Bed and Breakfast. Enough stuff there? Yeah, I would say it is just about right. They make a mean iced mocha, too!

I donated a mug for this basket for SDKITTENS in San Diego. It was put together by one of my awesome customers (who donated one of her own mugs, too! she rocks...). The auction brought in enough to fully rescue 6 orphaned and ill kittens from the local SPCA. If not for kitties, then why? :)

So in my second year in school in ceramics, I made this great little japanese winter tea bowl. I still am so smitten with it, no one else is allowed to use it, hehe... I have been trying to replicate it ever since and 3 years later, I think I finally got quite close. The one on the left is the original in a tenmoku reduction glaze. The new one is on the left in a speckled blue of brown glaze.The shape is a little off towards the top, but it floats just as nicely as the first one does. I love the round feet and curve of hte edge. Also the angle at wich the hip goes into the base...

Well. One of them died in the bisque fire. It is my educated guess that I did not let it dry out enough. Someday, I may learn that lesson... but, you do get to see how nicely I am throwing lately. Those are some pretty even walls.

The big monster with the lid is a full sized garlic holder, built to hold 3 or 4 bulbs of garlic. His horns on the lid will act as handles.

Should be dry enough to fire in about 2-3 days...

The San Francisco Renegade Craft Fair was a whole lotta fun! There were almost too many booths as it took about an hour to even sort of peruse half of it and even then I saw people with really cool stuff that I missed. I also met some great crafters from as far away as New York! Yay!
There were also a whole lotta people there, mostly on Saturday. Word of advice for future fairs: Show up right at opening time, there was barely anyone around until about 1.5 hours after it opened...

PS: that rockin' peacock feather dress is by Wear Yeti, whom I shared a booth with. Go check them out...

You really should go to this. It is amazing, inspiring and fun to see what everyone can make. I will be throwing clay at 11am and again at 4 pm. I will also be showing people how to make a slump mold bowl at 4:30 PM each day. I will be in the Expo Hall (marked on the maker map as "Maker Made Stage"), booth #276. I will be throwing 2 times a day and demo-ing slump molds 1 a day. Yipee! If you can make it, you really should go, the fair is freaking amazing!

big 'ol bowls!

I got a special order for a coupla big big bowls...I have to say that I have not thrown that much clay in awhile. I am afraid my arms will be sore tomorrow ;) I would say each bowl was about 5lbs of clay. A lot to muscle around on the wheel when your hands are small like mine. At least, that is what I tell myself so I won't bed bad about being wimpy...
I did 4, but the 3rd one got all wobbly and died on the wheel...It is now sitting in a bag to be recycled as soon as it dries out a bit...

Unloaded the Glaze firing...

So the glaze firing came out great. Only lost one piece due to dripping glazes to the kiln shelf. I am trying out a new glaze combination and sometimes it makes a mess. One casualty isn't so bad tho. Here is the new glaze:

Quite nice, I think :) The blue Vampire mug will be in the shop by tomorrow.

Ok. Now comes the glazing. I make all my own glazes from scratch. I have several buckets of different glazes. FIrstly, I have mix them up since things settle to the bottom while the buckets sit there on a shelf twixt glazings. I use a metal paint mixer on my drill.

Then I dip the waxed bisqueware into the glaze....

Now, you can see the glaze in a total mess on the bottom of the piece.

So, I wipe all that off after the glaze has dried a bit.

So, I glaze everything, taking great care to wipe off the excess glaze so it does not stick to my shelf and destroy the piece and my shelf.
Then I let the glaze dry. You can see where the wax was applied to the teeth and horns, nice and clean!

Then I load the kiln. I have a total of 9 shelves, but 2 live on the bottom, so they don't really count. I can usually sneak in a narrow shelf that I can load with tags and lids.

Voila! Three hours after I started glazing, the kiln is loaded and ready to fire...

Not everyone made into the firing. Because I can stack things inthe bisque firing, but not the galze fire, there is almost always someone left out. Good thing they are patient.

It will take about 8 hours to reach cone 10 then another 20 hours or so to cool down to where I can unload everything.

Unloaded the bisque firing. Lost 2 pieces because I was impatient and loaded them too wet... Sigh.... otherwise, all went well and I ended up with a whole buncha stuff to glaze. First, before glazing I wax 'em! The wax keeps any glaze from soaking into the bisqueware, very handy if you do not want your pieces melting into your shelves. Also handy if you have part of your mug that you do not want glazed, like the horns or teeth of a demon or the eyes of a particular critter. So the bottoms, horns and teeth got waxed tonight. Tomorrow I will glaze everything and load up the kiln for the glaze firing.

Latest bisque firing

So ceramics need to be fired twice (Yeah, I know, some people do it all in one firing, but that is too unpredictable for my tastes). The first of the firings is called a bisque firing, this takes out a good amount of the moisture, but is not hot enough to vitrify the clay. WHat you see loaded in the kiln is what is called greenware. That just means that the clay has been thrown and allowed to air dry. It is freakishly fragile at this stage and still makes me nervous to handle it. I fire it to cone 04 for my bisque firing, around 1925 degrees F. This is considered low firing. When someone says they use a low fire clay, it is in the range of cone 06- cone 1. It is the most common firing range for ceramics, but also leaves the piece relatively weak.
In a bisgue firing, since the clay is not vitrified or glazed, it is fine to have pieces touch each other or even be placed inside one another. Therefore I get a lot more in the bisque firing than I do in a glaze firing. I pack those bisques tight!
In my little Skutt Electric Kiln, this firing, done on a slow speed will take about 13 hours and about 65kwH of power. I then have to wait for it to cool down, which takes about another 18 hours or so depending on the outside temperature. SO at some point tomorrow, I will take pieces out to wax and glaze them. more on that tomorrow!

custom order cream and sugar set

This is a special order I am doing for a customer, but I am rather pleased with this set so far. providing it survives the firings and such... It has a creamer, a sugar bowl, a sugar packet holder and a tray. From the top, the tray looks like a nifty skull! I just wish things would dry faster >.< More pics if they all survive the glaze firing.

A Salt Pig. What the heck is that? A snack? a sea-faring porcine animal? well, it may be those things as well, but I am more interested in the version that is also known as a salt cellar. See, you fill it with salt and then you have your salt very handy when you need a pinch and don't feel like standing there for ever, shaking small amounts into your culinary creation. Thanks to a suggestion from the lovely Lucas at WearYeti, I will now be making them to keep in the olde shoppe. (Don't you love frivolous letters?) I made 3, but they already sold, so I will have more in my next firing, sometime around February 25th-ish, be sure to go check them out!

February Craft Show!!

Yes, yes, it is the first Saturday of the month which means another IndieSacramento Craft Show. This one is at the Trinity Church in Sac on Capitol avenue, February 7th, from 10am -3pm. There will be at least 35 different vendors. I totally recommend going. I will be there with stuff from both Skeletaldropkick and Ochibo. I will also have Skeletaldropkick seconds there, some only good for holding pencils and some that only have a very minor flaw for much cheaper than my normal shop prices.

I have been working on getting a few busts going... I have 12 so far, but want to make a couple more. Half of them have been bisque fired and I will glaze fire them this week. The other half are waiting a nice long time to dry out before I put them in to bisque (Lesson learned from the exploding walrus in the last firing, I had to re-make him...)

"The Studio" who is participating in the 3rd Saturday art walk tonight. Well, she (Melissa) has offered to carry some of my stuff (like the necklaces, transfers and ceramics.) now through December.

I am so in love with this guy! he was glazed with tenmoku and speckled with a vivka clear over that. He was made from slip molds which I usually view as cheating. Well, heck. I still view them as cheating, but this guy came out pretty fun :)
His eyes are cobalt oxide with vivka clear over them and the antlers are a brushed on yellow salt glaze. I think I mostly like his glazing. It came out exactly like I wanted it to and if you work with clay/glaze, you will understand exactly how exciting this is :)

Yes, the GOLD COUNTRY FAIR is almost here and I will have 4 peices in it. I just LOVE the fair, what with the chickens, pigs and dried herbs, the wine cork collections, the bird's nest collections and the ceramics. Ahhh.... I can smell the livestock now. Oh, wait, that was just one of my kids, sorry. Anyway, I have little Cuttlefish (pictured here) on display there and a few other fun things. Cuttlefish is a sort of mess-kit. The lid comes off and can be used as a plate. The lid is also notched to allow you carryt he whoel thing with a fork or spoon in it while the lid is on. So handy!!

3 Lobed eye!!! AAAGGHHH!!!

Well, it is not really THAT scary, but I just got my copy of 3 Lobed Eye in the mail today and you really should check it out. It was released by Legion Press. It ia n annual of short fiction stories by various writers and features 4 visual artists as well. I am one of the srtists..... it is my older photography that you will find in the book. Alas, it is sold out. Makes me sad... but then again people liked it, huh? :)
This is the second book my photography has been featured in, the first was in Volume 6 of Morbid Curiosity.
So why am I telling you this since you can't get it anymore? I dunno, just thought it was a nice book put together by a very nice guy and extra cool coz my photoraphy is in it. :D

Well, I sold a coupla peices, none that I had up on etsy, so those are all returned :) and a cool gallery here in town (Exploding Head) Is closing... very sad. It was a great gallaery.

Back from camping

Well, I came back from camping and playign last night and I have to say that there were a acouple of inspiring momnets. this picture is of neat-o seaweed on sandstone. I love the colors. may do something with that.
Otherwise, i am looking forward to the start of school. I am doing rather well selling stuff on Etsy and Have almost gotten my cabinets to a reasonable amount of fill... I am also looking forward to making all sorts of new things.

My dreams of my own kiln have been dashed to the ground. So sad. Just to get the wiring to my garage woudl actually cost more than the kiln. So unless I can find a tiny cone 8 kiln used, I won't be getting one. Waaaaa! But I am enrolled in the local junior college in a ceramics course ( as well as Microbiology, critical thinking and algebra) So I can abuse... er, i mean USE the kiln there and the wheels. But I won't get much out til mid to late september. There has to be some way to get a small enough kiln that runs on 30 amp wiring.....

Since I have a coupla prints left over from when I did Photography en mass, I thought I would clear those out, too. So they will start appearing in my
Etsy shop. I have no immediate plans to make any more of these although I do still have the negatives around. I have no resourcce for running more prints, tho.
The prints are all done in the ACTUAL darkroom! Woah. And have absolutely NO digital fixings at all involved in either the image or the printing. We are talking actual film (35mm), negative and printing.
All the animals in my photos died naturally (considering being run over by a car is natural). I have not to my knowledge ever killed an animal. I did hit a bird once in my car, but it flew away.
So, that said, go check them out!

So I am selling off my supply of polaroid transfers from the old days. They are going on my etsy shop for about $20 each with free shipping in the United Sates of America, about $5 shipping to other parts of the world. They come with a 5x7 mat in most cases and really really nifty. If you don't know anything about the polaroid transfer process, try checking THIS palce out.
You end up with a unique print hat has the same image as another, but a very different look. I don't have a whole lot of them left, maybe about 25 or so of different images. I will be putting them up on the

But it is not. So I really have not much to say. Are all electricians like other repair services, where they keep pushing back the date they can come by? This guy is still not here to get me hooked up for a kiln. Sigh.
Otherwise... I guess there is not much happening art-wise in my life right now. Plpanning on posting another 2 or so things to my

So, about the county fair... Can I tell you how cool it is? They have a "fresh herbs" category. I mean really, you don't get better than that :). Also I have to say that my peices took 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th places. BUT. I also have to say that there were only 5 entries in that category! Woo Hoo!! I am SO cool! hm. well. maybe a little cool? just for taking the time to enter the danged things?
Sigh. Well anyway. the electrician comes tomorrow to refit my grarge for the kiln. I soent all week cleanign out a spot big enoug for the dang thing, hopefully it will work out...
Oh, and the quilts at the fair were AMAZING! I am not a big quilt fan, but DANG! there was some incredible work there....
But, you do realise what winning those ribbons means, right? I am now....

To buy or not to buy?

So I amlooking at this used kiln. It is a
Skutt 1027, but an older model without all the bells and whistles such as fully automatic everything. But... it does go to cone 10 and is only a coupla years old. So! I would need to get my garage wired for it, (it is crazy wiring) but I do have a good place for it. Hmmmm... I am kinda leaning towards it. Heck, if it doesn't work out, I could always resell it....
Then all I would need at my home is a wheel to make more monster cups/bowls/plates. But then I may end up waist deep in ceramics as I cannot find a gallery who will show my stuff. But again, I have not looked terribly hard for one either. Perhaps that is wher eI should start :)

Oh and usually there is someone's Beanie Baby collection or nest collection. How much fun can one have for under $10?! Really, you should go, really...

SO I got a bunch of stuff outta the kiln, but... I am SO disappointed in what it looks like. I usually use a cone 10 firing (2350 degrees F) but since I no longer have access to that kiln, I have had to use an alternative one. This kiln only goes up to cone 5 (2230 degrees) and, can I tell you what a difference that extra 120 degrees makes! dang. I had no idea. The top is what rutille looks like when fired to cone 10. Rather impressive, huh? The bottom image is what cone 5 does to cobalt and rutille oxides. I think I will be needed to get a kiln that goes to cone 10. I had wanted to save the energy that is needed for reaching cone 10, but if I don't like the result, what is the point?
